During her speech at the Democratic National Convention on Monday evening, Hillary Clinton took a strong stance against her former political rival. At one point, she led the crowd of delegates in a “lock him up” chant.
Like many speakers before her, Clinton highlighted former President Donald Trump’s recent hush-money conviction, which sparked the energetic chant, echoing the “lock her up” refrain that was popular at Trump rallies in 2016.
“Donald Trump fell asleep at his own trial and when he woke up, he made his own kind of history: the first person to run for history with 34 felony convictions,” Clinton remarked, smiling as the crowd broke into the anti-Trump chant.
Clinton opened her speech by commending President Biden, referring to him as “democracy’s champion at home and abroad.”
“He brought dignity, decency, and competence back to the White House,” she said, taking another jab at Trump.
Clinton also acknowledged the significance of Vice President Kamala Harris’s candidacy, predicting that in November, Harris would break the “glass ceiling” that Clinton was unable to shatter in 2016.
The former secretary of state subtly referenced the ongoing argument that Trump poses a threat to democracy, particularly after his failed attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
She emphasized the president’s constitutional duty to “take care that the laws be faithfully executed.”
“Those are the words our founders used: ‘Take care,’” she noted. “Just look at the candidates. Kamala cares about kids, families, and America. Donald only cares about himself.”
